Finding space to work from home

Owing to the Covid19 pandemic, working from home has become the norm – as opposed to an occasional perk – for anyone able to work remotely. It has become part of the property buying agent’s brief and is a trend that is set to continue. Many companies are expecting employees to return to commuting into an office but maybe not five days a week.

A constant ‘home office’ and workspace has become a vital part of people’s lives. While employees have been awaiting to know about a return to their usual workspace, there has never been a better time to create a more permanent dedicated home office.

Even if all you can allocate is a spare wall in the hallway or a bedroom alcove, the following may help you to create the best use of space to work in and certain to increase your efficiency and productivity.

How do I create office space at home and make it a positive working environment?

  • Location Is vitally important. Home offices can come in many different models and sizes

  • Allow enough space to be able to work comfortably

  • Allocate space for your mouse and keyboard

  • Select a suitable desk and comfortable chair

  • Thought about buying a standing desk

  • Think about storage, shelving and be organised

  • Consider if you need space for a place to have meetings

  • Ideally have natural light and good ventilation

  • Make sure you have high-speed internet

  • Decorate and individualise, add some green plants

Where in my home should my home office ideally be?

One of the best places for a home office is in a spare room, so that you can shut the door at the end of your working day and “go home,” leaving your work behind. If possible, the spare room should never be used for any other purpose.

Should a desk face a window or a wall?

Windows with some sort of view can be inspirational and stimulating, however, facing the view could also be a distraction. Work while you are at your desk and enjoy the view when you are on a break.

For some, having their desk face the wall is their preferred direction as it limits distractions avoid gazing out the window or watching people pass your door. Avoid feeling enclosed and claustrophobic due to lack of space if possible.

Also consider the glare of light on your computer screen and the background that will be on show for those all important “zoom” calls.
