Finding peace in the countryside

Leaving the cacophony of city life for a quieter existence in the country is a common aspiration. Although the current lockdown is providing a temporary respite, city life is invariably lived against a backdrop of sirens, roadworks, trains, planes and neighbours.

It’s therefore no surprise that many of our clients wanting to leave the city, cite peace and quiet as one of the key things on their wish list.

Unless retiring or working from home, most clients relocating still need to be within a reasonable commuting distance of a major city and are therefore not looking at very remote areas. As such, complete peace and quiet can be very hard to find especially when the countryside has noises of a different kind.

When imagining the sounds of a perfect country scene, birdsong, the thwack of a cricket bat, a burbling stream and bees buzzing are probably what come to mind.

In reality, those idyllic sounds are often accompanied by the sounds of people working and living such as farm machinery, animals, church bells and in many instances some level of road noise.

As property search experts our role is to understand what peace and quiet really means to our clients, will the quiet hum of village life suit them, or would Sunday morning church bells and neighbours be too much? Would backing onto a farm be a country dream or would the regular interruption from tractors and bird scarers protecting crops be off putting? Would living in a very remote situation provide the quiet life but at the cost of having to always get in the car to buy a pint of milk, or after a dinner party?

If clients have lived in a city for many years, it's completely understandable that the practicalities of living a country lifestyle won’t be at the forefront of their minds. Our extensive experience means that we are tuned in to the reality of country living so we can provide guidance and insight to help clients find that perfect escape to the country.

Peace and quiet is just one of the things on most wish lists, our role is to understand how we can help clients find what they are after when it's not always as straight forward as they might think.
