Hertfordshire is one of the smallest Counties in England but still contains many important English heritage artefacts and historical sites. Although Hertfordshire is on London’s doorstep a Hertfordshire property search would feature many picturesque villages, hedgerows and open fields. The County itself lies between Bedfordshire in the north, Cambridgeshire in the north-east, Buckinghamshire in the west, Essex in the east and central London only twelve miles to the south, making it an ideal location for commuters. Many opt to live in Hertfordshire so that they gain more property for their money, living outside London, as well as enjoying the scenery and history of the county.

St Albans A Modern City and Hertfordshire’s Oldest Town

The historic and attractive city of St Albans is situated between the M25, M1 and A1(M) motorways and also enjoys good rail links to the north and west (commuters travelling to Kings Cross station for London). St Albans is surrounded by countryside, with nearby towns including Harpenden, Hatfield, Welwyn Garden City and Hemel Hempstead. St Albans itself has a street market, excellent shopping facilities and many high achieving schools, which complements the parks and historic houses on its doorstep. St. Albans is Hertfordshire's oldest town, a modern city shaped by over 2,000 years of human occupation and activity. St Albans was first built as Verulamium by the Romans, with the city renamed St. Albans after the first British Christian martyr. The greatest boost to Hertfordshire came during the Industrial Revolution, after which the population rose dramatically. Today, the Roman heritage and imposing cathedral attract many visitors throughout the year.

Hertfordshire Home to Many UK Companies

Further afield, just a few miles away from St. Albans, are other attractions and stately homes, including Hatfield House, Knebworth and Shaws Corner at Ayot St. Lawrence, once home of George Bernard Shaw. Although steeped in history with evidence of settlement dating back to the Middle Stone Age, Hertfordshire today is home to headquarters for many UK companies. Hemel Hempstead, Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City are all well-known locations for big brand names. Hatfield, once a former centre for the aircraft industry, has become a business park attracting many large employers as well as being home to the new campus for the University of Hertfordshire. Hertfordshire may be small but with big name employers and commuters based in the county it is still one to consider.
