The greatest boost to Hertfordshire came during the Industrial Revolution, after which the population rose dramatically. Today, the Roman heritage and imposing cathedral attract many visitors throughout the year.

Further afield, just a few miles away from St. Albans, are other attractions and stately homes, including Hatfield House, Knebworth and Shaws Corner at Ayot St. Lawrence, once home of George Bernard Shaw. Although steeped in history with evidence of settlement dating back to the Middle Stone Age, Hertfordshire today is home to headquarters for many UK companies. Hemel Hempstead, Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City are all well-known locations for big brand names. Hatfield, once a former centre for the aircraft industry, has become a business park attracting many large employers as well as being home to the new campus for the University of Hertfordshire. Hertfordshire may be small but with big name employers and commuters based in the county it is still one to consider.
